Essex is genuinely one of the best dog-friendly counties in the UK. Ancient forests you can walk for hours, dozens of pubs with dog menus, and a coast where dogs are welcome year-round on parts of most beaches. Here are 20 of the best combos for 2026.
Best off-lead woodland walks
1. Epping Forest
6,000 acres. Off-lead throughout unless signed. Wanstead to High Beach is the classic 6-mile loop. Ancient beeches, deer if you're patient, cafes at each end.
2. Hatfield Forest
National Trust, off-lead in most parts (some deer-enclosure sections signed). 3-6 mile loops. Cafe and toilets at the visitor centre.
3. Danbury Ridge (Blakemore Wood, Backwarden Common)
Off-lead throughout. Bluebells in April/May. Multiple parking points — the smaller ones stay quiet.
4. Weald Country Park
Off-lead throughout. Deer park has an on-lead zone (worth respecting — the deer are close).
5. Belfairs Woodland, Hadleigh
Off-lead. Sea views on the return. Combines well with a Hadleigh Castle detour.
6. Norsey Wood, Billericay
Off-lead. Quietest of the big Essex woods. Best for a solo dog-walker's Sunday morning.
Best coastal dog walks
7. Old Leigh to Southend seafront
Off-lead on the stretch between Old Leigh cockle sheds and Chalkwell (year-round). 3 miles one-way.
8. West Mersea to East Mersea
Dogs welcome on the western beach year-round. 4-mile beach walk.
9. Cudmore Grove, East Mersea
Nature reserve with cliff-top and beach walks. On-lead in bird areas, off-lead below.
10. The Naze headland walk, Walton
Cliff-top loop, 2 miles. Off-lead throughout. Fossil beach at the base.
11. Mistley to Manningtree towpath
Estuary walking, swans everywhere. On-lead near the swan population, off-lead beyond.
Best village/river loops
12. Dedham to Flatford
Constable country. 4-mile loop along the River Stour. On-lead through Flatford Mill grounds.
13. Great Bardfield loop
3-mile village-and-fields walk. Ends at The Chequers for a pint.
14. Finchingfield to Great Bardfield via bridleway
Longer 6-mile walk between two picture-postcard villages.
15. Thorndon Country Park
Split into North and South parks. South is off-lead, more open. North is more wooded.
Best dog-friendly pubs (dog welcome throughout, not just garden)
16. The Cricketers, Danbury
Dog treats behind the bar, water bowls at every table, an actual dog menu (chicken with rice, biscuits). Muddy paws welcome.
17. The Rainbow & Dove, Hastingwood
Dog-mad landlady. Every dog is greeted. Small pub, big welcome.
18. The Punchbowl, Battlesbridge
Riverside, dog-friendly throughout including inside.
19. The Ferry Boat, North Fambridge
Dogs welcome in the bar, garden and (with mud tolerance) restaurant.
20. The Two Brewers, Colchester
