We've always been proud to be Essex's local directory — helping residents find trusted businesses, jobs, events and services across the county. Today, we're expanding that mission.

What's Changed?

Discover Essex now welcomes businesses based anywhere in the UK, as long as they serve Essex clients. Whether you're an accountant in London working with Essex-based companies, a web designer in Hertfordshire building sites for Essex businesses, or a recruitment firm covering the South East — there's now a home for you on our platform.

Who Can List?

If your business falls into a service-based category and you can honestly say you serve Essex clients, you're welcome. This includes:

• Professional Services — Accountants, solicitors, financial advisors, surveyors, architects

• IT & Technology — Web developers, managed IT services, software companies

• Marketing & Creative — Design agencies, photographers, videographers, copywriters

• Recruitment & Training — Recruitment agencies, training providers

• Insurance & Travel — Brokers, travel agents serving Essex clients

Categories that require a physical presence in Essex — like restaurants, hair salons, gyms, plumbers and electricians — remain Essex-only. That's by design: we want every listing to be genuinely useful to Essex residents.

How Does It Work?

When you create a listing, you'll see a new option: "My business is based outside Essex". Tick this, and you'll be asked two simple things:

• Your region — London, Hertfordshire, Kent, Suffolk, or anywhere in the UK

• How you serve Essex — Do you work remotely with Essex clients? Travel to the area? Or serve clients across the UK including Essex?

Your listing will then appear in our directory with a clear "Based in [Your Region] · Serves Essex" badge, so residents know exactly what to expect. You'll still appear in category searches and can receive reviews, messages and enquiries just like any Essex-based listing.

Why Are We Doing This?

Simple: Essex residents already use national services. A Chelmsford business owner might use an accountant in London. A family in Colchester might hire a web designer from Cambridge. These are real relationships that already exist — we're just making them easier to discover.

At the same time, we're keeping the platform Essex-first. Non-Essex listings don't appear on town pages, don't inflate our Essex business counts, and only show when users actively choose to see them via the "Include UK-wide" filter on our business directory.
