How we rank listings on Discover Essex

Most local directories keep their ranking signals opaque. We don't. Below is the exact order of signals our search pages use, written in plain English — and where money does (and does not) come into it.

The 5 signals, in priority order

    Plan tier

    Premium → Enhanced → Free. Industry-standard for directories; disclosed on the pricing page. Spotlights are NOT part of this ladder.

    Has an owner photo

    Listings with a real uploaded photo rank above those using a placeholder or stock image — incentivises completeness.

  3. 3

    Essex first

    "Based in Essex" listings rank before non-Essex businesses that have opted to be discoverable here.

  4. 4

    Rating & reviews

    Within each tier, higher-rated listings with more verified reviews rank above lower-rated ones.

  5. 5

    Recency

    Most-recently-updated business listings rank higher; jobs and classifieds use renewed-or-posted; events use next-upcoming date.

Sponsored placements are kept separate

Category Spotlights — our optional paid placements — never displace organic listings. They appear in a clearly labelled “Sponsored” carousel above or alongside the main results, with rel="sponsored" on every outbound link as Google requires.

A business with no Spotlight booking can still rank first in its category if its organic signals are the strongest. The organic ranking pipeline does not see Spotlight purchase data — they are computed separately.

Upload at least one real owner-photo — not stock imagery
Fill every profile field (hours, website, social, full description)
Claim your listing and complete verification for the Verified badge
Refresh your description twice a year so the recency signal stays fresh
Encourage happy customers to leave reviews from their own accounts
Add the towns you actually cover in your service-area field

What we will not do

  • We do not accept payment to award the Verified badge. It is granted on factual checks alone (see how we verify).
  • We do not display Spotlight placements unlabelled. Every sponsored card carries the “Sponsored” tag.
  • We do not import third-party reviews. Every star rating comes from a signed-in directory member with a verified email.
  • We do not personalise rankings based on visitor IP. Two users in different counties see the same ordering for the same query.
  • We do not penalise listings for negative reviews beyond the natural effect of a lower average star rating.

Frequently asked questions

Do paid listings rank higher than free listings on Discover Essex?▾
Within a category or town page, yes: Premium tier listings appear before Enhanced tier, which appear before Free tier. This is the same convention used by Yelp, Yell and Trustpilot. However, within each tier, listings are ordered by the relevance signals below (image presence, recency, rating, review count) — so a complete, well-reviewed Free listing will rank above an incomplete Premium listing within their respective tier groups. The Verified badge is awarded on factual checks alone and has no link to plan tier.
How does Discover Essex decide ranking within a tier?▾
Inside each tier the secondary sort applies, in this order: (1) listings with a real, owner-uploaded photo come before listings with a placeholder or no photo, (2) listings in Essex come before any "covers Essex but based elsewhere" listings, (3) businesses are ordered by most-recently-updated, (4) jobs and classifieds are ordered by recently-renewed-or-posted, (5) events are ordered by next-upcoming event date. Reviews and ratings influence ranking on category pages where they apply.
How are Category Spotlights different from organic ranking?▾
Category Spotlight placements are entirely separate from the organic listings grid. They appear in a clearly labelled "Sponsored" carousel above (or alongside) the main results. Every sponsor card carries the text "Sponsored", the outbound link uses `rel="sponsored"` as Google requires, and Spotlights never displace listings from the organic results — they sit alongside them. A business with no Spotlight booking can still rank first in its category if its organic signals are strongest.
Does paying for a Spotlight improve my organic ranking?▾
No. Spotlight purchases are sold as visibility, not as a ranking boost. The organic ranking pipeline does not see or use Spotlight purchase data — they are computed separately on the backend.
How are reviews counted in ranking?▾
On category and town pages, average rating and total review count are factored into the relevance bucket within each tier. We only count reviews from signed-in directory members (one review per user per business per 60 days, profanity-filtered, with a right of reply for the business owner). We do not import third-party reviews.
How does location affect ranking?▾
On town-specific pages (e.g. /trades/electricians/colchester) only listings whose declared service area includes the town are shown. On general category pages, listings whose stated `town` field is in Essex appear before "non-Essex" listings that have opted to be discoverable here. We do not use the visitor's IP geolocation to alter rankings.
Can I improve my organic ranking without paying?▾
Yes — Free listings can compete head-to-head with Free, and within their tier they are ranked the same way as Premium listings. Quick wins: upload at least one owner-photo (not stock imagery), complete every profile field, claim and verify your listing for the Verified badge, refresh your description twice a year, and encourage satisfied customers to leave honest reviews.
How can I challenge a ranking decision?▾
Email support@discoveressex.co.uk with your listing URL. We will explain in plain English which signals are pulling your listing up or down and what could be changed. Where we agree a listing has been unfairly ranked due to a bug or moderation error, we correct it.
