How we verify listings on Discover Essex

A Verified badge means we have independently confirmed the business name, contact phone number, postal address (where supplied) and — for regulated trades — trade credentials such as Gas Safe registration, NICEIC membership or relevant insurance. Listings without the badge are still real Essex businesses but have not yet completed the verification process.

Each Verified listing has been checked in three ways: (1) we call the published phone number and confirm the business is reachable on it, (2) we cross-reference the business name and address against Companies House and the trade body register where applicable, and (3) we require a verifiable email match against the domain or the business owner. Trade-specific credentials (Gas Safe, NICEIC, FMB, etc.) are confirmed via the relevant public register.

Every new business, job, event and classified listing enters a manual moderation queue before going live. We typically approve within a few hours during UK business hours. Listings can be rejected for incomplete contact details, evidence of being a national lead-generation reseller rather than a genuine local business, prohibited content (firearms, tobacco, regulated medicines) or repeat duplicate posting.

Reviews are written by signed-in directory members; we do not import third-party reviews. Each review is rate-limited (one per user per business per 60 days), profanity-filtered, and the business owner has a right of reply. Reviews flagged by the business owner or other members are checked manually within 48 hours and removed if they breach our guidelines.

Complaints can be raised via the “Report this listing” button on any listing page or by emailing support. We acknowledge complaints within 1 working day, contact both parties, and where evidence supports it we will remove the Verified badge, suspend the listing pending investigation, or remove the listing entirely. Decisions are reviewable on appeal.

Within each category and town, Premium and Enhanced tier listings appear above Free tier listings — this is industry-standard for local directories and is disclosed clearly on our pricing page. However: (a) within the same tier, listings are ranked by the same relevance signals (completeness, rating, review count, recency); (b) the Verified badge is awarded on factual checks alone and has nothing to do with which plan you are on; (c) Category Spotlight placements are entirely separate from organic results, always labelled "Sponsored" with `rel="sponsored"` on the outbound link. Discover Essex is an independently-operated local directory built and run from Essex, England. We are not affiliated with Essex County Council or any national directory chain. Editorial decisions — including who carries a Verified badge — are made by the editorial team, not the sales side of the business.

If your listing has been rejected, suspended, or had a Verified badge removed, reply directly to the email you received from us. An appeal is reviewed by an editor who was not involved in the original decision. Most appeals are resolved within 5 working days.
