The Essex gym scene has quietly outgrown the "one PureGym per town" era. Between the boutique HIIT studios in Chelmsford, the strength-focused gyms in Colchester and the family-friendly leisure centres across the coast, there's a much better option than the default chain for most people. Here's the 2026 breakdown.
Best budget chains (under £30/month)
PureGym
Chelmsford, Basildon, Colchester, Southend, Braintree, Harlow, Brentwood. £22-28/month, no contract. 24/7 access. Fine for people who know what they're doing — the classes are OK, the machines get busy at peak.
The Gym Group
Colchester, Basildon. £19-25/month. Slightly better free-weight areas than PureGym. Booking-required classes.
Better Leisure (council-run)
Riverside Chelmsford, Basildon Sporting Village, Dovercourt, Southend Leisure. £30-40/month + swimming pool. Family-friendly, sometimes tired equipment but excellent pools.
Best premium gyms (£50-90/month)
David Lloyd Chigwell
From £110/month family. Full clubhouse feel — indoor + outdoor pools, tennis, spa. The default for South Essex families.
David Lloyd Colchester
From £95/month. Same set-up further north. Excellent childcare on site.
Chelmsford Country Club
From £75/month. Less flashy than David Lloyd but arguably better value if you use the pool and classes.
Nuffield Health Chelmsford / Basildon
From £65/month. Health-first vibe, excellent equipment, good spa. Class variety is strong.
Best boutique studios (pay-per-class or £80-140/month)
F45 (Chelmsford, Brentwood, Colchester)
From £110/month unlimited. 45-minute functional classes. Best for people who need external motivation.
1Rebel-style studios
Essex has yet to get a proper 1Rebel, but Circuit Society (Chelmsford) and Strong Fitness (Brentwood) come close.
Barrecore Brentwood
£28 per class or £185/month unlimited. Best barre studio outside London.
Third Space-style
Not yet in Essex — but Fit4Less Premium (Basildon) and Blocks Colchester are the nearest equivalents.
Best independent strength/lifting gyms
Iron Palace, Chelmsford
£45/month. Proper strength gym. Deadlift platforms, competition benches, chalk allowed. No mirrors on the squat rack.
Southend Barbell
£55/month. Powerlifting-focused. Community-run, coached sessions available.
Bethnal Barbell (Southend branch)
£60/month. Newer, more polished. Excellent coaching.
Best swim + gym combos
Riverside, Chelmsford — three pools, gym, ice rink
Basildon Sporting Village — 50m pool, best facilities in South Essex
Dovercourt Bay Leisure — quieter, coastal, family-friendly
Braintree Sports & Health Club — outdoor pool in summer
