15 Free Things to Do in Essex This Weekend (Local's Guide, 2026)

Essex doesn't have to cost a fortune. Between the coast, the forests and a dozen genuinely lovely market towns, there's more to do here on a Saturday than a whole weekend in central London — for exactly zero pounds if you know where to look.

Forest & Countryside

1. Epping Forest — Wanstead to High Beach walk. Six miles of ancient woodland. Deer if you're lucky, definitely dogs.
2. Hatfield Forest, Takeley. National Trust land but the car park is the only cost — leave the car at the village and walk in free.
3. Hadleigh Country Park. 2012 Olympic mountain-bike venue, now free to roam with cracking Thames views.
4. Danbury Ridge trails. Three linked nature reserves, wildflower meadows in spring, blackberries in September.

Coast & River

1. The Naze, Walton. Fossil hunting on the beach — kids find sharks' teeth almost every visit.
2. Old Leigh cockle sheds walk. Two miles along the estuary, ends at proper fish-and-chip country.
3. Mersea Island wreck walk. Low tide only — check the times, then walk out to the wooden barge remains.
4. Southend seafront cycle path. Seven miles flat, pier-to-pier, sea on one side the whole way.

Culture, Markets & Museums

1. Colchester Castle Park. Roman walls, a boating lake and a bandstand. The castle museum has free entry days — check ahead.
2. Chelmsford Museum, Oaklands Park. Free entry all year. The natural history section is a rainy-Sunday saviour.
3. Braintree Museum. Small but proper — Bocking silk mills, Warner textiles, the lot.
4. Saffron Walden Saturday market. The oldest market square in Essex. Try the cheese stall.

Hidden Gems Most People Miss

1. Cudmore Grove, East Mersea. Cliff-top walk, WWII pillboxes, seals on the sandbank at dawn.
2. The Backwarden, Danbury Common. Heathland, pond, no crowds. Even on bank holidays.
3. Weald Country Park, South Weald. Deer park, ornamental lake, and a Victorian ice house you can walk inside.
