Halloween Events in Essex 2026: Every Pumpkin Patch, Ghost Tour & Kids' Trail

Essex does Halloween better than you'd think. The county has more genuine pick-your-own pumpkin farms than any other in the South East, four proper scare attractions, and — for the older kids — a growing crop of theatrical ghost tours in Colchester and Chelmsford. Here's the 2026 line-up.

Best pumpkin patches (open October)

1. Foxes Farm Produce, Basildon and Great Bardfield

The biggest patch in Essex. Genuine field-to-basket pumpkin picking, hay rides, food trucks. Book online — walk-ins turned away at busy weekends.

2. Copas Pumpkins at Marlow (accessible from West Essex)

Not strictly Essex but the closest premier patch. Photo-perfect setup.

3. Barleylands Pumpkin Patch, Billericay

Combines with the farm park — kids' activities all day. Best for under-8s.

4. Kirby-le-Soken Pumpkins

Small, family-run. Cash-only. Best atmosphere on Sunday afternoons.

5. Wick Country Park pop-up patch

Weekends in October only. Free entry, pay per pumpkin.

Best family Halloween trails

6. Marsh Farm Halloween Weeks, South Woodham Ferrers

Full-day event. Wizard trail, spooky farm, indoor and outdoor. Runs mid-October to Halloween.

7. Colchester Zoo Boo

Late October. Themed nighttime openings 4-8pm on the final week. Genuinely great atmosphere.

8. Hylands House Trail

Half-term event through the parkland. Free to enter, £5 for the trail activity book.

9. Belhus Woods Halloween Trail

Free event run by Essex Country Parks. Wristband collectible at the end.

10. Hatfield Forest Spooky Trail

National Trust. Family-friendly. Sunset walks best.

11. Tulleys Farm Shocktober Fest (accessible from South Essex)

Not in Essex but the closest big scare event. Age 12+.

12. Halloween Nights at Kelvedon Hatch Nuclear Bunker

Yes, that Kelvedon Hatch. Underground bunker + scare actors + jump-scares. Book. Sells out.

13. Cressing Temple Halloween Nights

Historic barns lit by candlelight, actors in period costume. More atmospheric than terrifying.

14. Layer Marney Tower Torch-Lit Tours

Every Friday and Saturday in October. Age 8+.

Best ghost tours

15. Colchester Ghost Tour

Runs Friday and Saturday nights through October. Meet Balkerne Gate. 90 minutes.

16. Chelmsford Cathedral Ghost Tours

Once-a-year event. Book the moment tickets drop (mid-September).

17. Saffron Walden Historic Ghost Walk

Sundays only. Small groups, lantern-lit.

• Everyman Chelmsford Halloween Season — classic horror re-releases through October.
• The Empire Braintree "Silver Screen Spooks" — matinee horror screenings, over 50s and daytime crowds.
