Best Places to Work From Home in Essex: Cafes, Coworking & Libraries

Working from home is great until it isn't. The dog. The doorbell. The realisation you haven't spoken to a human in 3 days. Here are the best places across Essex to escape your home office — ranked for a genuinely productive day out.

Coworking with day passes (no membership required)

The Hoffmann Foundation, Chelmsford

Day pass £15. Includes fast Wi-Fi, unlimited coffee, quiet corners, and phone booths. Right by the station.

The Innovation Centre, Chelmsford

Day pass £20. More corporate feel. Meeting rooms bookable by the hour.

COLBEA, Colchester

Day pass £10. Best value in the county. Slightly out of town — free parking makes up for it.

The Grow Hub, Braintree

Day pass £12. Small startup community feel — you'll leave with two new LinkedIn connections.

Basildon Business Centre

Day pass £15. Best facilities south of Chelmsford — including proper standing desks.

Cafes that welcome laptops (real ones)

Blue Mountain Cafe, Chelmsford

The unofficial coworking cafe of central Chelmsford. Wi-Fi actually holds up on video calls. Plug sockets in every corner. Order a coffee an hour and no one complains.

Fenwick Coffee, Chelmsford (Baddow Road)

Perfect for a 2-3 hour block. Get there before 11am to secure a good spot.

Grounded, Chelmsford (Moulsham Street)

Genuinely fast Wi-Fi. Best for morning sessions before the brunch rush from 11:30am.

Naked Bean, Colchester

Independent roaster with a work-friendly upstairs seating area. Reliable Wi-Fi and outdoor courtyard for phone calls.

The Base, Southend

Best WFH cafe on the coast. Sea views from the upstairs. Take breaks by walking along the pier.

Fetch, Chelmsford (Duke Street)

Small tables, always busy — but 90 seconds from the station means it's perfect for a "worked in Essex, then commuted in" hybrid day.

Libraries (free, quiet, underrated)

Chelmsford Central Library

Bookable study rooms free with a library card. Silent zone on the second floor. Free basic Wi-Fi.

Colchester Central Library, Trinity Square

Recently refurbished. Individual work desks with power. Free Wi-Fi (register once).

Southend Central Library, Victoria Ave

Enormous. Second floor has quiet study desks with harbour-side windows.

Basildon Central Library

Underused = quiet. Great if you need proper silent focus for 4-6 hours.

Get a free Essex library card at libraries.essex.gov.uk — takes 2 minutes.

Quiet-corner pubs (2-3pm slot)

An underrated hack: mid-afternoon pubs. Most Essex pubs are empty between lunch and evening service, and many have decent Wi-Fi. Try:

  • The Cricketers, Danbury — beer garden Wi-Fi, quiet rear snug.
  • The Chequers, Great Bardfield — original beams, surprisingly fast broadband.
  • The Bell, Great Waltham — snug room with a working fireplace and a Wi-Fi router visible from your seat.
