1. Hedingham Castle, Halstead
One of the best-preserved Norman keeps in England, Hedingham Castle comes alive in spring with jousting events, Easter activities, and beautiful grounds to explore. The Knights of Middle England jousting spectacle at Easter is an absolute highlight for children and adults alike. The castle grounds are perfect for picnics, and the surrounding village of Castle Hedingham is worth a wander too.
2. RHS Garden Hyde Hall, Chelmsford
Hyde Hall is stunning in spring, with daffodils, camellias, and early blossom creating a riot of colour. The gardens host a rolling programme of family events including Kids Craft Clubs, the Early Spring Show, and their popular Easter Detectives trail. There’s plenty of space for children to run around, and the café is excellent.
3. East Anglian Railway Museum, Chappel
For young train enthusiasts, the Day Out With Thomas events over Easter are unmissable. Children can ride behind a real steam engine, meet characters from the show, and explore the museum’s collection of historic locomotives. Even outside of special events, the museum offers a charming, affordable day out that’s particularly suited to under-10s.
4. Abberton Reservoir, Colchester
Managed by Essex Wildlife Trust, Abberton is a wonderful spot for nature-loving families. Spring brings the Eggcellent Easter Trail, pond dipping sessions, and guided walks. The visitor centre has interactive exhibits, and the reservoir itself is one of the most important freshwater sites for wildlife in the country.
5. Marsh Farm, South Woodham Ferrers
A proper Essex institution, Marsh Farm offers hands-on animal experiences, tractor rides, and seasonal events throughout spring. Lambing season is a particular draw — watching newborn lambs is something children remember for years. The farm also has excellent indoor play areas for when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
6. Audley End House and Gardens, Saffron Walden
This English Heritage property combines a magnificent Jacobean mansion with extensive gardens and parkland. 7. Mountfitchet Castle, Stansted

8. Hylands Estate, Chelmsford
Hylands offers free entry to its beautiful 574-acre parkland, making it one of the best value days out in Essex. Monthly Open Estate Days in spring feature street food markets, local traders, guided tours of the historic house, and plenty of open space for children to explore.
