The Essex beer garden season is a real thing — starting late April, peaking May Bank Holiday, running to late September if we're lucky. Here are the 20 gardens worth clearing a Sunday for.
Best riverside beer gardens
1. The Anchor, Danbury
Not riverside strictly, but overlooks a huge pond and lawns. Wood-fired pizza oven in the garden all summer.
2. The Marlborough Head, Dedham
River Stour views. Booking essential on hot weekends.
3. The Ship & Anchor, Wivenhoe
Right on the quay. Boats bobbing, sun setting. Genuine "postcard Essex".
4. The Rose & Crown, Halstead
Riverside walk pub. Excellent for the drink-first walk-back approach.
Best coastal beer gardens
5. The Old Ship, Heybridge Basin
Blackwater estuary views. Boats moored right by the garden wall.
6. The Peldon Rose, Mersea Road
Ancient smugglers' pub with a walled garden. Best cider selection in North Essex.
7. The Ferry Boat Inn, North Fambridge
Right on the River Crouch. Watch the yacht club racing while you drink.
8. The Ferry Boat, Bradwell-on-Sea
End-of-the-earth vibes. Silent, remote, huge lawn. Book Sunday roast if you go.
Best walled and pretty gardens
9. The Cricketers, Clavering
Jamie Oliver's family pub. Walled beer garden with cricket-pitch views. Book weeks ahead.
10. The White Hart, Great Yeldham
Old coaching inn with a huge cobbled and gravelled garden.
11. The Bell Inn, Horndon-on-the-Hill
Coaching-inn courtyard garden. Very pretty. Excellent food.
12. The Compasses at Pattiswick
Country-house feel garden. Perfect for a long summer lunch.
Best family-friendly gardens (kids' area / play equipment)
13. The Anchor, Danbury
Excellent play area, sandpit, occasional face-painting.
14. The Green Man, Little Braxted
Kids' menu, animal petting area (goats, chickens), big lawn.
15. The Sailing Oak, Hullbridge
Play frame, kids' menu, ice cream from the garden hatch.
16. The Willow Beauty, Chelmsford
Urban but well-executed. Great for after school-drop.
Best dog-friendly gardens
17. The Cricketers, Danbury
Dog-water bowls at every table. Dog menu (yes, really — chicken, biscuits, treats).
18. The Punchbowl, Battlesbridge
Riverside, dog-friendly throughout including inside.
19. The Two Brewers, Colchester
Enclosed garden — safe to let smaller dogs off-lead if you sit at a table.
20. The Rainbow & Dove, Hastingwood
Small garden, dog-mad landlady, always dog treats behind the bar.
Booking rules that will save your Sunday
- Book by Thursday for a weekend garden table when the forecast is 22°C+.
- The moment temperature crosses 25°C, walk-ins evaporate. If you didn't book, arrive before 12:30.
- Sunday 2pm-4pm is often more available than 12:30-2pm — kitchens open, families gone home.
- Weekday evenings May-July are the county's best-kept secret — great weather, empty gardens.
What to check before you book
- Whether the garden takes food orders (some are drinks-only)
- Dogs on-lead / off-lead / not welcome
- Whether they take card in the garden (a surprising number still don't)
- Parking — many rural Essex pubs have limited spaces on hot Sundays
