Most "SEO tips" articles are written for someone selling software in California. If you run a plumbing business in Basildon or a café in Saffron Walden, 90% of that advice is noise.
This guide is different. Every step below is something an Essex small-business owner can genuinely do this week — no agency, no monthly retainer, no code.
1. Own your Google Business Profile (still the biggest lever)
When someone types "plumber near me" in Chelmsford, Google shows a map pack of three local businesses before any website. Getting into that pack is the single highest-return thing you can do.
- Claim your profile at business.google.com if you haven't already.
- Fill every field — services, opening hours, photos, service areas. Google visibly rewards completeness.
- Post an update every 2 weeks. It doesn't have to be clever. A photo of a finished job counts.
- Reply to every review — good and bad — within 48 hours.
2. Get consistent citations across local directories
Google cross-checks your business name, address and phone number (NAP) across the web. If your details are inconsistent across 20 directories, Google trusts you less.
Prioritise the ones that actually still matter in 2026:
- Google Business Profile
- Discover Essex (you're already here — claim or add your listing)
- Yell.com
- Trustpilot or Checkatrade if you're a trade
- Facebook Business Page
Skip the "we'll submit you to 500 directories" services. They're mostly dead sites now and Google discounts them.
3. Get reviews — but do it properly
Reviews are the second-biggest local SEO signal after Google Business Profile completeness. But how you ask matters:
- Ask at the moment of satisfaction, not a week later. Right after the job is done. Right after they've said "thank you".
- Use a short link. Google gives you one — it's in your profile under "Get more reviews".
- Aim for one new review a week. Little and often beats a flood of 20 in a day (Google's spam filters flag that).
4. Answer the questions people actually search
Nobody in Essex searches "artisanal caffeine solutions". They search "coffee near me open now" or "best kids' cafe Colchester".
Pop your competitors into Google and read the "People also ask" box. Those are the exact questions to answer on your website — one per page, with the question as the heading.
5. Speed up your website (yes, still)
Google's Core Web Vitals aren't going anywhere. On mobile, your homepage should load in under 2.5 seconds. Test yours free at pagespeed.web.dev. If it's slow, the fix is usually:
- Shrink your homepage hero image (most are 3-5x bigger than they need to be)
- Remove unused plugins if you're on WordPress
- Turn on Cloudflare — it's free
6. Keep your Discover Essex listing fresh
We now flag listings that haven't been updated in 6 months. Fresh listings rank better in our internal search AND in Google, because Google reads structured directory data. Log in once a quarter, add a new photo, tweak your services list. Ten minutes, real impact.
Doing all six of these?
You'll be ahead of 95% of Essex small businesses. Genuinely — most competitors are still ignoring their Google Business Profile.
If you haven't added your business to our directory yet, it's free to list — and being in a curated local directory is one of the "citations" Google looks for in step 2.
