Essex is a county of surprising variety. Beyond its reputation, you’ll find some of England’s most charming market towns — places where independent shops thrive, historic buildings tell centuries-old stories, and community spirit runs deep.
Whether you’re planning a day trip or considering where to set up a business, here’s our guide to the market towns that make Essex special.
Saffron Walden
Often cited as one of the prettiest towns in Essex, Saffron Walden is a visual treat. Its medieval street plan is largely intact, with timber-framed buildings, a magnificent parish church, and the extraordinary ancient turf maze on the common. The town has a thriving independent shopping scene, excellent pubs and restaurants, and a lively weekly market. Nearby Audley End House adds a world-class heritage attraction to the mix.
Maldon
Sitting on the Blackwater Estuary, Maldon is famous for its sea salt and its fleet of Thames sailing barges. The Hythe waterfront is one of the most photographed spots in the county, and the High Street is lined with independent shops, galleries, and places to eat. Promenade Park offers stunning estuary views and Maldon’s regular farmers’ markets are among the best in the region.
Thaxted
Thaxted is a gem. Its guildhall, dating from around 1390, is one of the finest in England, and the medieval church of St John the Baptist dominates the skyline. The town is smaller and quieter than some on this list, which is precisely its appeal. The annual Thaxted Festival brings world-class music to this tiny Essex town every summer.
Burnham-on-Crouch
Known as the “Cowes of the East Coast,” Burnham-on-Crouch is a sailing town with real character. The High Street has a mix of independent shops, and the riverside setting is beautiful. The Royal Corinthian Yacht Club and the annual Burnham Week regatta give the town a distinctive identity that draws visitors from across the country.
Coggeshall
A quiet but rewarding town with one of the highest concentrations of listed buildings in Essex. Paycocke’s House, a National Trust property, is a beautifully preserved Tudor merchant’s house. Coggeshall also has some surprisingly good restaurants and is perfectly placed for exploring the surrounding countryside.
Dedham
Technically in the Dedham Vale on the Essex-Suffolk border, Dedham is Constable Country at its finest. The village has galleries, tea rooms, and a timeless quality that attracts visitors year-round. Flatford Mill is a short walk away, and the surrounding water meadows are as beautiful now as they were when Constable painted them.
Manningtree
England’s smallest town has a disproportionately good food scene and a lovely position on the Stour Estuary. The weekly market on the high street is worth a visit, and the RSPB reserve at nearby Cattawade offers excellent birdwatching. Manningtree proves that good things really do come in small packages.
