1. Braxted Coffee Roasters (Bell Street)

The roastery. Beans from single-origin Ethiopia to a rotating monthly Colombian. The staff will over-share about the beans if you let them — it's charming, not annoying. Small seating area, so best for a takeaway.

2. Fenwick Coffee (Baddow Road)

Nailed the "proper Australian cafe" vibe. Everything from the crema to the courtyard is polished. Weekend brunch is worth the queue.

Best for working remotely

3. Blue Mountain Cafe (Duke Street)

Serious Wi-Fi, plenty of tables with plug sockets, and staff who don't glare at you for nursing a flat white for two hours. Nice quiet corner upstairs.

4. The Hoffmann Foundation (New Street)

Half working space, half cafe. Sells day passes if you want a proper desk — but the cafe tables are free and the coffee is excellent.

Best for brunch with friends

5. The Hardy Tree (Springfield Road)

The eggs royale is the most Instagram'd breakfast in Chelmsford for a reason. Book Saturdays.

6. Grounded (Moulsham Street)

Weekend-only brunch menu that changes fortnightly. Vegan options that don't feel like an afterthought. The pancakes are a small event.

Best for a quick coffee near the station

7. Fetch Coffee (Duke Street)

Literally 90 seconds from the station. Grab-and-go done properly — good beans, fast queue, and they know the 07:42 crowd by name.

Best hidden gems

8. Rio Coffee (Baddow)

Chelmsford's oldest indie coffee shop. Italian family-run since 1998. Cash only, still. Espresso the way it's meant to be.

9. The Coffee Merchant (Great Baddow High Street)

Great Baddow proper — tiny 12-cover shop with the best iced coffee in the county in summer. Excellent cinnamon buns from the local bakery next door.

Best for weekend dog walks

10. Central Park Cafe (Central Park)

Not the world's finest coffee, but it's the coffee-with-a-dog-and-a-view experience that matters. Sit outside overlooking the river.

11. Hylands House Cafe (Hylands Park)

Inside the historic house. Dogs welcome on the outside terrace. Combines perfectly with a lap of the estate.

Best for a treat

12. Little Cake House (High Chelmer)

Not primarily a coffee shop, but the cakes are extraordinary and the coffee is much better than it needs to be. Best patisserie-style shop in the town centre.
