Choosing childcare and education providers

Always check Ofsted registration and read the most recent inspection report in full — "Good" or "Outstanding" is the workable minimum. Visit at least twice at different times (morning drop-off chaos and a calmer afternoon) before booking. Ask about staff turnover specifically: high turnover is the strongest practical signal of poor management. Staff-to-child ratios are legally regulated but the quality of interactions matters more than the numbers — observe how staff actually engage with children. For tutors: degree subject and teaching experience matter, but tutoring competency is its own skill — a brilliant teacher isn't always a brilliant 1-1 tutor. Ask for a trial session and a clear plan of what's being targeted. DBS-checked status is essential for tutors and any childcare worker, and increasingly verifiable online.
