Guided By You Midwifery provides personalised, relationship-led private midwifery care across Essex, London and Hertfordshire. I’m Emma Lawless, an experienced independent midwife with over 12 years’ experience supporting women and families throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period.

I provide antenatal care, home birth support, support in a hospital setting, postnatal care and infant feeding support. I also support women planning a VBAC or HBAC, making choices outside standard guidelines, or simply looking for more continuity and time with a midwife they know and trust.

Continuity is at the heart of my care. I take the time to get to know the women and families I support, understand what matters to them and provide evidence-based information so they can make informed choices about their care.

I support families across Essex, including Waltham Abbey, Epping, Loughton, Chigwell and surrounding areas, as well as London and Hertfordshire.

If you’re considering private midwifery care and would like to find out whether Guided By You Midwifery could be right for you, I offer a free, no-obligation consultation where we can have a chat about the support you’re looking for.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an independent midwife do?
An independent midwife provides personalised maternity care with more time and continuity than is often possible within standard maternity services. I can provide antenatal care, home birth support, support alongside your hospital care, postnatal care and infant feeding support, depending on the package or care you choose.
What areas in Essex do you cover?
I provide private midwifery care across all parts of Essex, including Waltham Abbey, Epping, Loughton, Chigwell, Basildon, Ongar, Brentwood, Harlow and surrounding areas. I also support families across London and Hertfordshire. If you're unsure whether I cover your area, please get in touch.
Can I have a private midwife and still use NHS maternity care?
Yes. Choosing private midwifery care doesn't mean you have to give up your NHS maternity care. I can work alongside the care you receive from NHS maternity services, depending on what support you would like during your pregnancy, birth and postnatal period.
Do you provide home birth support in Essex?
Yes. Home birth is an important part of my practice. For a planned home birth, I work alongside another midwife from a small circle of midwives I know and trust professionally and personally, who share my approach and values.
Can I choose private midwifery care at any stage of my pregnancy?
Yes. You don't necessarily need to have private midwifery care from the beginning of your pregnancy. Some women contact me early on, while others get in touch later because they're looking for more continuity, additional support or simply more time to talk through their options. You're always welcome to contact me to discuss what you're looking for and whether I can support you at that stage of your pregnancy.
Can you support me if I'm planning to give birth in hospital?
Yes. Private midwifery isn't only for home birth. I can provide personalised antenatal and postnatal care while you plan to give birth in hospital, giving you continuity and the opportunity to build a relationship with a midwife who knows you and what matters to you. I can also support and advocate for you in hospital as a birthing partner / support person alongside the NHS midwives.
Do you provide postnatal care and feeding support?
Yes. I provide postnatal care and infant feeding support, including time to talk through feeding, recovery, your baby's wellbeing and how you're feeling as you adjust to life with your new baby.
How do I find out if Guided By You Midwifery is right for me?
I offer a free, no-obligation consultation so we can have a relaxed conversation about the support you're looking for, what matters to you and whether my approach to care feels right for you and your family. Call Emma on 07395 509701 to book a free consultation
