Forget the tired clichés about Essex. The county's actually one of the most varied corners of England: 350 miles of coastline, four officially Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, more medieval churches than any other county, two world-class theme parks within 30 minutes, and one of the densest concentrations of independent food and drink in the south-east. This is our locals' bucket list of 30 things every Essex resident (and visitor) should tick off in 2026 — sorted by category so you can mix-and-match by mood, budget and weather.
Outdoor & nature (1–8)
1. Watch sunrise from the beach at West Mersea. Park at the eastern end of Coast Road, walk 200m to the shore, and the Blackwater estuary turns gold at dawn. Free, magical, and quintessentially Essex.
2. Walk the entire Saffron Walden circular (8 miles). Through Audley End grounds, across the wildflower meadows of Wendens Ambo and back via the medieval town centre. Best in May and June.
3. Cycle the Flitch Way — 15 miles of disused-railway path from Bishop's Stortford to Braintree. Mostly flat, mostly traffic-free, and dotted with proper country pubs.
4. Spot seals at Hamford Water. The tidal lagoon between Walton-on-the-Naze and Harwich is home to a year-round colony of harbour seals. Take a boat trip from Walton or watch from the Naze cliffs.
5. Climb Danbury Hill for one of the best inland views in the county — Tilbury, Canvey, Foulness and the Thames estuary all visible on a clear day.
6. Forage in Epping Forest with a licensed guide. Spring brings wild garlic and morels; autumn brings ceps and chicken-of-the-woods. Free if you know what you're doing; £40 for a half-day with a guide.
7. Kayak the River Stour from Dedham to Flatford — Constable country, exactly as he painted it.
8. Watch the murmuration at Wat Tyler Country Park in October–February. Tens of thousands of starlings perform aerial ballet at dusk over the marshes near Pitsea.
History & culture (9–15)
9. Walk the walls of Colchester Castle — Britain's oldest recorded town, with a Norman castle built directly on Roman foundations.
10. Tour Audley End House at full tilt: the kitchen garden, Victorian service wing, and stables are all dressed and worth a full half-day.
11. See the Layer Marney Tower — the tallest Tudor gatehouse in England, with stupendous views from the roof.
12. Visit Hedingham Castle for jousting weekends in the summer — proper armoured horseback knights, food trucks, the lot.
13. Wander the medieval lanes of Thaxted on a Saturday morning, then time your day around lunch at the Swan.
14. Explore Tilbury Fort — the Tudor and Napoleonic-era artillery fortification where Elizabeth I gave her famous Armada speech in 1588.
15. Take the boat from Brightlingsea to East Mersea across the Colne — a 10-minute crossing on a working passenger ferry, exactly as it has been done for 300 years.
Food & drink (16–22)
16. Eat oysters at Wivenhoe straight from the Colne. The Black Buoy and the Rose & Crown both serve them fresher than anywhere in London.
17. Saturday morning at Saffron Walden Market. Tudor square, 1,300 years of trading, the best-stocked artisan market in the county.
18. Sunday roast at the Mistley Thorn — local pub, locally-sourced everything, properly inland Essex.
19. Brewery tour at Adnams' Aldeburgh sister site or Ridleys Brewery in Hartford End — both run guided tours and tap-room tastings.
20. Wine tasting at New Hall Vineyards in Purleigh — one of England's longest-established commercial vineyards.
21. Cream tea on the lawn at Layer Marney in summer.
22. Browse independent cafés and restaurants across the county for somewhere new every weekend.
Family & rainy day (23–30)
23. Adventure Island, Southend-on-Sea — free entry, pay-per-ride, and the seafront is a full day's entertainment in itself.
24. Colchester Zoo — one of the UK's top-ranked smaller zoos, with strong conservation credentials.
25. Mersea Island Beach Hut Day. Hire a hut for £45–£70/day from the West Mersea Boat Club.
26. The Tropical Wings sanctuary at South Woodham Ferrers — butterflies, birds and reptiles under glass.
27. Hylands Estate, Chelmsford — 600 acres of free parkland, a Georgian mansion you can tour, and an excellent café.
28. The Beecroft Art Gallery at Southend — small, free, brilliantly curated.
29. Cinema at the Tiptree Tea Room cinema — Sunday afternoon classic films with proper Tiptree cream tea.
30. Browse the calendar of upcoming events across Essex — there's something on every weekend, free or paid.
