Ongar, formally known as Chipping Ongar, is a small market town in the Epping Forest district of west Essex with a population of around 6,000. The town's most prominent historical feature is Ongar Castle, a Norman motte-and-bailey fortification with one of the best-preserved mottes in Essex. The Epping Ongar Railway, a heritage line, runs steam and diesel services between Ongar and North Weald stations, providing a popular family attraction during operating weekends. Ongar's high street features a selection of independent shops, restaurants, and traditional pubs.
