Saffron Walden

Saffron Walden is one of the best-preserved medieval market towns in England, situated in the far north-west corner of Essex near the Cambridgeshire border. The town takes its name from the saffron crocus that was cultivated here extensively during the 15th and 16th centuries. With a population of around 16,000, it retains a remarkably intact historic centre featuring timber-framed buildings, the imposing ruins of a 12th-century castle, and the parish church of St Mary the Virgin, one of the largest in Essex. Bridge End Garden is a restored Victorian garden with a hedge maze open to visitors.
