Shoeburyness occupies the eastern tip of the Southend-on-Sea city area, forming the southernmost point of the Essex coastline where the Thames Estuary meets the North Sea. The area has a population of around 15,000 and a distinctive character shaped by its long military history. The former garrison and artillery ranges, which were in use from the 1840s until the late 1990s, have been partially redeveloped and partly converted into Gunners Park and the Shoebury East Beach nature reserve.
