Recommendation

Can anyone recommend a decent Sunday roast in Colchester that isn’t rammed by 1pm? I’m torn between trying the Rose & Crown up by Castle Park or somewhere around North Hill/Head Street after a walk along the river from Lower Castle Park. Would love to hear where you rate for roasties and gravy, and if you need to book ahead.

If you want to dodge the 1pm crush, I’ve had a good roast at The Wig & Pen on North Hill and it’s been quieter if you grab a table around half twelve. I’d still book ahead though as Sundays can suddenly fill up.

Rose & Crown’s a solid shout for roasties and proper gravy, but it does get busy so I’d book if you’re aiming for after your Lower Castle Park river walk. If you want somewhere nearer North Hill/Head Street, are you set on eating around 1 or happy a bit earlier?

If you don’t fancy the Castle Park crowds, head up to The Red Lion on Head Street – their roast is decent and it’s usually a bit calmer if you go just after 12. I’d still book though, Sundays in town fill up fast.

If you’re walking up from Lower Castle Park, The Haywain on the High Street does a really decent roast and you’ve got a better chance if you go for a 12ish sitting rather than 1pm. I’d still ring and book on the day as Sundays can turn quickly.
