Popped into the market on the Common this morning and grabbed a coffee and pastry from one of the stalls, then wandered up King Street towards Castle Street and realised I still don’t have a go-to spot for a proper Sunday roast in town. I’ve tried The Eight Bells a couple of times and liked it, but I’m wondering if I’m missing a quieter pub that does great gravy and decent veg. Any recommendations near Bridge End Gardens or around High Street, and do you need to book ahead?

If you’re wandering up towards Bridge End Gardens, The Cricketers is a good shout for a proper roast and they’re usually a bit quieter than The Eight Bells. I’d book ahead on Sundays though as it can fill up quick.
