Can anyone recommend a decent Sunday roast in Loughton that isn’t a let-down? I’m torn between trying The Victoria Tavern on High Road and heading up towards The Owl on Epping New Road after a walk round Epping Forest from the Stonards Hill entrance. If you’ve been recently (or know somewhere better nearby like around Debden or Theydon Bois), I’d love to hear what you’d pick and why.
If you’re already doing Epping Forest from Stonards Hill, I’d go to The Owl but get there early as it fills up fast on Sundays. If you want to stay in Loughton, I’ve heard decent things about the roasts at The Last Post in Debden too.
I went to The Victoria Tavern on High Road a few Sundays back and it was actually really good, plus you’re not trekking up Epping New Road if the weather turns. If you’re starting at Stonards Hill though, do you want somewhere you can book or are you happy chancing a walk-in?
I’d go Owl after the Stonards Hill/Epping Forest walk – been a couple of times this year and the roast is solid and the gravy’s proper. Victoria Tavern’s alright but can be a bit hit and miss; are you after beef or chicken?
The Victoria Tavern’s been decent for me lately, but if you fancy making more of a day of it after the Stonards Hill loop I’d try The Owl and book ahead as it gets rammed. Are you after a traditional roast or something a bit more gastro?
