If you’re eating your way around Southend-on-Sea this week, make time for a proper wander off the seafront: the independent cafés and bakeries tucked around the High Street and side roads are where the real surprises are. Our tip is to go early for the best pastries, then stay local with a lunch spot that changes its specials and actually talks you through them. Where are you sending friends for the best breakfast, and which place does the most reliable coffee when the weather turns?
Totally agree about ducking off the seafront – I always send people to Bread & Co for an early pastry, then swing by Southend Pier Museum café for a solid coffee when it’s blowing a gale. Any lunch spots near the High Street you’d recommend that actually change the specials day to day?
I’m a fan of going early to Alex’s Bakery for a couple of buns, then grabbing a flat white at The Coffee Lounge if it’s tipping it down. Any of the High Street places doing proper rotating lunch specials at the moment?
